Bid price

Bid describes the buyer’s side of the market, not a guaranteed future purchase price for the reader.

What bid means

Bid describes the buyer’s side, not a mandatory price for the reader’s future purchase. In an immediate sale, the counterparty is the buyer. Investor.gov distinguishes bid from ask and warns that the last trade does not guarantee the execution price.[4](#source-cm-orders) The best bid is the highest matching offer in the selected book and at the selected moment.

Quantity and limits

Check the available quantity, units and data time. A price available for a small part of an order does not promise the same result for the full volume. Bid is not a fair-value estimate or a direction forecast. The difference from ask forms the trading spread, which the SEC treats as a cost factor in its exchange-traded-fund example.[5](#source-cm-etf) Outside the book or under another trading regime, price formation may differ. A detailed review of both sides appears in the [order-book guide](/guides/order-book-bid-ask/).
