Meaning and entitlement
A dividend is a distribution of company funds among shareholders under an established corporate decision. It is commonly discussed as an amount per share and relative to the purchase price. The amount, frequency and entitlement depend on company decisions, the terms of the relevant shares and applicable procedures.
Illustrative calculation
If an illustrative dividend is 5 roubles per share and an investor is entitled to a payment on 6,000 shares, the amount before possible withholdings is 30,000 roubles. The example assumes that all eligibility conditions are met; simply owning a share on an arbitrary date does not establish entitlement to a particular payment.
Limits and risks
A dividend is not the same as EPS and is not guaranteed merely because a company has paid regularly in the past. Funds may be needed for development or debt repayment. A high dividend yield can sometimes reflect a falling share price and the risk of reduced payments. Analysis should consider the sustainability of cash flows, not only the past distribution record.
