Unit economics

Unit economics is an analytical description of revenue and costs for an order, customer, contract or another selected unit. The term does not prescribe one accounting formula. A positive order contribution after direct costs does not yet mean a positive customer result after acquisition costs or a positive company result after infrastructure costs. Sustainable expansion requires checking the return on additional investment.[97](#source-cv-value-creation)

Example and limits

In a hypothetical model, an order brings in one thousand roubles and requires seven hundred roubles of direct costs. The contribution is three hundred roubles. If customer acquisition cost nine hundred roubles, three such orders merely cover acquisition before general expenses and the cost of time. The calculation does not establish a standard for a real business.

Before comparing figures, label the unit, the age of the customer group, the cost composition, returns and discounts. Forecast future repeat purchases separately from the result already achieved. A good unit does not guarantee good economies of scale: growth may require new capacity, staff and financing. The metric helps test the mechanism, but it does not select a share price or promise a profit to the owner.
