Definition
ROA shows profitability relative to a company’s assets. In one common analytical version, net income for the period is divided by average assets and expressed as a percentage. Other versions use a different profit measure, so check the exact formula before comparing.
Example
If annual net income is 60,000 roubles and average assets are 600,000, ROA is 10%. For a capital-intensive producer, the result cannot be mechanically compared with a company that needs almost no owned physical resources.
Limitations
ROA is not the return on an investor’s shares. It depends on asset carrying values, financing structure and one-off results. An impairment can reduce the denominator and later raise the ratio without improving sales. Study the trend with turnover, margin and earnings quality, using comparable periods and the same reporting perimeter.
