Level entry and owner right
Intermediary accounting requires distinguishing between an entity's own assets and instruments held for others. But the specific protections, methods of confirmation and consequences of insolvency are determined by the relevant jurisdiction and treaties. It is impossible to deduce from one word “depository” an unconditional guarantee of the availability of assets at any time. You also cannot promise an automatic quick transfer to another participant under any circumstances. The material does not establish the rights of a specific client and does not replace verification of the license, accounting conditions and rules of transactions.
Let's take an abstract two-level diagram. Client A has 25 of identical securities, while client B has 35. The top level for this intermediary reflects the aggregate position of 60. An internal transfer of five securities from A to B changes the client balances to 20 and 40, but the total position remains 60. Arithmetic shows why a single aggregate record is not enough to identify an individual package. This is not a description of a real register or a statement that every transfer has exactly this procedure or does not require other entries.
Reconciliation requires the same cut
If two reports show different quantities, you must first compare the date, time, and settlement status. One document may reflect completed transitions, another document may reflect pending delivery. Identifiers, share categories, units of quantity, and reflection of corporate actions may vary. The reason for the discrepancy is not automatically determined: it cannot be immediately declared either a violation or an innocuous interface delay. It is important to obtain an explanation from the responsible party and confirmation at the level where the relevant records are maintained.
Quantity reconciliation is not the same as monetary value reconciliation. The two reports may correctly show the same number of securities, but use different quotes and valuation dates. Conversely, matching the final monetary amount does not prove the correct set of instruments. [Identifier Guide](/guides/issuer-and-security-identifiers/) helps separate the business name from the category and issue. In practice, a table with the identifier, quantity, date and basis of the movement is useful. The total value of the portfolio should be checked after the composition of the rights is clear.
Corporate information also goes along the chain
Voting, communications and payments are associated with the established order of interaction between the issuer, accounting organizations and the owner. The SEC describes the flow of information and payments in intermediary accounting in its jurisdiction.[21](#source-cm-custody) This explains why the receipt of a message at one level does not necessarily coincide in time with the final reflection. But the timing and instructions for a specific event need to be checked separately. The usual [shareholder right](/guides/shares/) does not allow one to guess the procedure based on a foreign example or the experience of another category of securities.
Consider a test counterexample: There are twenty stocks in a client report, but the notice is in a different category with a similar name. An issuer match does not resolve the entity error. Another example is that the action is already reflected in the quantity, but the old name is still saved in the application. No case can be resolved by logo. It is necessary to establish the identifier, the basis for the change and the documents of the corresponding date. Infrastructure literacy starts with these checks, not with confidence in a beautiful interface.
For your archive card, keep the accounting agreement, reports on movements and balances, confirmations of transfers and documents of corporate events. Do not publish personal account numbers and personal information for the sake of verifying the overall scheme. [Trade to Settlement Route](/guides/exchange-and-settlement/) explains how an accounting movement occurs. The guide does not promise security for any failure and does not suggest changing the intermediary: it helps to separate the trading transaction, legal right, account and the displayed monetary value.
The document is responsible only for its level
An aggregate entry confirms a specific aggregate position, but does not replace all client entries underneath it. The client report, in turn, does not automatically reveal the entire top chain. You cannot select one convenient document for verification and demand that it answer all questions without additional grounds. You need to understand which participant maintains the relevant records and what date the document confirms.
If the intermediary changes, it is useful to separately consider the outgoing transfer, its acceptance, and the new balance confirmation. Until the completion of this sequence, intermediate statuses can differ. There are no deadlines or promises of automatic transfer. The correct learning point is to request a consistent set of confirmations and not publish personal details for the sake of explaining the overall scheme. The digital representation itself does not replace the legal basis, but the absence of a paper certificate does not mean the absence of a valid right.
