Cash-generating unit

A cash-generating unit helps test the recoverability of assets that do not create independent cash flows.

Meaning under IAS 36

A cash-generating unit helps test the recoverability of assets that do not create independent cash flows. IAS 36 describes selecting the smallest group that generates independent cash flows. Source: **curr-stat-ias36**, About, cash-generating unit.

An illustrative production line

An individual machine in a production line may operate only together with other resources. Assigning it an arbitrary share of total revenue as an independent cash flow would be too simplistic. But grouping assets too broadly can also hide a weak operation behind a strong one.

Do not confuse the boundaries

Do not confuse this unit with a legal entity, a division or a reportable segment: they may coincide, but that does not follow from the name alone. When reading an impairment test, the economic organization of inflows, consistency of boundaries between periods and explanation of perimeter changes matter.
