Meaning and contractual terms
Default is the failure to perform an obligation as required. In a debt context, it may involve a missed interest or principal payment, as well as other events defined in the documents. The exact timing, consequences and possible cure periods must be read in the contract or offering documents rather than inferred from the general label.
A missed coupon payment
If an issuer does not transfer a scheduled coupon, an investor should check which event the documents describe, whether procedures are specified and what authorized sources report. The absence of a payment does not automatically show how much money will ultimately be recovered: that depends on subsequent developments and creditors’ rights.
Default is not automatically bankruptcy
Default is not always the same as bankruptcy and does not necessarily mean an immediate and final loss of the entire amount. Negotiation, restructuring and partial recovery may be possible, but none guarantees an outcome. A high stated yield is often accompanied by substantial non-payment risk. Debt burden, cash flows and the security structure are important to the analysis.
