Three questions about one number
The official IAS 1 overview expressly addresses going-concern matters. The issued 2026 IAS 8 text also presents basis-of-preparation provisions and changes connected with IFRS 18. In a real report, establish the applied edition and any early application separately; do not automatically transfer a future presentation to every period. Accrual does not mean arbitrary estimation
When a service is consumed, the lack of a paid invoice does not necessarily mean there is no expense. But an intention to buy a service does not create a current result. Reconstruct the event: what has been received or transferred, what amount is supported and which period it belongs to. The payment calendar answers a different question: when cash will move.
Suppose a fictional organisation consumed service costing 24 in December and will pay in January. In the educational model, December result before the service was 40. After recognition it is 40 − 24 = 16; December cash is unchanged by this transaction. The January payment settles the obligation and is not necessarily a new January expense. The example excludes dispute about whether the service occurred.
Materiality is not a permanent percentage
Suppose an omitted expense is 3 against revenue of 1,000. Its revenue share is 0.3%. But with a pre-error result of 2, it changes profit into a loss: 2 − 3 = −1. The same amount looks small against sales and decisive against the result. A mechanical revenue threshold can therefore hide an important circumstance.
Consider magnitude, nature, context and the aggregate of misstatements. A result near a contractual boundary, a related-party transaction or an omitted important disclosure requires substantive analysis. No audit threshold is set here; the examples show why one percentage cannot resolve every situation. Materiality and its context should be checked in curr-stat-ias8-text, Definitions, material.
Going concern requires separate reading
Positive profit does not guarantee timely payment of obligations. A fictional manufacturer has profit of 80, debt of 150 due before its main sales season and free cash of 20. A simple comparison shows an uncovered remainder of 130. This calls for reviewing receipts forecasts, creditor arrangements and disclosed uncertainties, but is not a ready conclusion that operations will cease.
The reverse error is treating every warning as proof of immediate closure. Distinguish a risk event, management plans, a material uncertainty and the selected basis of preparation. An analyst’s stress scenario is not an auditor’s conclusion, and management’s statement does not replace analysis of cash timing.
Practical order and boundaries
Create three independent columns: was the event recognised in the correct period; could the information change a decision; and on what basis were the statements prepared. If an explanation for one question is used for another, return to the underlying document. Read the notes carefully, not only the primary statements.
This material is not a conclusion about the materiality of a particular error or the going concern of a particular issuer. [Statement adjustments](/guides/financial-statement-adjustments/) and [profit versus cash](/guides/profit-vs-cash/) are useful next steps for separating recognition rules from analytical concerns.
Do not mix answers in an analytical memo
If management explains weak cash with good accrued profit, that may explain a timing gap but does not answer whether debt can be repaid on time. Conversely, saying all invoices were paid does not prove profit was measured correctly: a payment may relate to an earlier period or future performance. Two questions require two independent pieces of evidence.
Likewise, a small amount is not immaterial merely because it does not affect cash today. It may change a key classification, trend or understanding of a transaction. State which conclusion depends on the information rather than writing only “the amount is small”.
Use different confidence language in the final memo. A confirmed event, an estimated amount and a future scenario should be recognisable in the wording. If the basis is not disclosed, leave the question open. This prevents missing data from becoming an overconfident conclusion and tells the next reviewer which documents are still needed.
Standard passport: the system name does not create comparability
Before comparing, record six fields from the basis of preparation: organisation and reporting perimeter; full standard or special basis; period; applied edition; transition provisions and early application; significant accounting policy. “Under international rules” is not an explicit compliance statement. Separate owner statements and group consolidated statements do not become one basis because they share a logo. Inventory or property measurement policy also cannot be inferred from accrual alone.
A fictional group owns 80% of a subsidiary. One document contains the parent’s separate statements and another the consolidated statements. The increase in assets cannot be read as annual business growth: the measurement object changed. Even within one perimeter, revaluation and cost models can produce different balances and depreciation. Establish policy and disclosures first, then build a bridge; averaging two balance sheets does not fix incomparability. The general framework source is curr-stat-ias1, About; specific policies require the relevant standard.
As of October 17, 2026, the IFRS Foundation states that IFRS 18 is required for annual periods beginning on or after January 1, 2027, with early application permitted; it replaces IAS 1. Source: report-ifrs18, About, effective date. This does not mean every report published in 2027 uses the new basis automatically. A year beginning July 1, 2026 and one beginning January 1, 2027 have different start dates; read the application and transition statement. An issued-2026 edition is not automatically mandatory for every 2026 report.
For an educational analysis, keep a passport beside the table: group; full year; currency and scale; applicable edition and basis for application; policy; source and document version. If edition, perimeter or lawful basis cannot be established, that is a limitation on comparison, not permission to choose a convenient option silently. Neither the passport nor an official-standard link proves compliance or determines which standards a company must apply under local law.
