Separate the asset and the debt
An educational participant buys an asset for 10,000 monetary units using 2,000 of own funds and 8,000 borrowed. Initial capital equals asset value minus debt: 2,000. If a price gap leaves the asset valued at only 7,500, the amount after deducting the unchanged debt is minus 500. The loss relative to the original own funds is 2,500, or 125%. Interest, fees, taxes and closing costs are excluded, so the example does not enlarge the result with invented expenses; it shows the possibility of a negative residual.
The obligation to repay 8,000 does not automatically fall with the asset price. Collateral gives the creditor certain rights, but it does not turn the loan into a borrower’s right to refuse the remaining debt. Contractual consequences must be checked separately. SEC materials discuss additional funding requirements and forced sales in their jurisdiction; foreign percentages and notice procedures are not transferred to a Russian contract.
Why closing is not insurance
When the price jumps, an executable intermediate level may not exist. An order activated at a specified value is not required to execute at that value. Investor.gov distinguishes the activation condition from the market execution price. A limit parameter can restrict the acceptable price while leaving the order unfilled. The conclusion is only that an expected exit price cannot unconditionally be recorded as a guaranteed upper bound on loss.
A broker’s forced procedure also need not match the owner’s prior calculation. Available markets, contractual terms, collateral and processing time matter. A risk measure within an allowed range before the gap does not prove that the position could be closed before a negative residual appeared. Automated risk management is not a personal insurance contract. Test a scenario where the immediately available price is materially worse than the previous observation, not only a smooth path through intermediate prices.
A derivative has a different form
MOEX explains that opening a futures contract does not pay the full value of the underlying asset; collateral and variation settlement are used. There may be no explicit 8,000 loan as in this example, but cash obligations can still exceed the initially allocated amount. Do not mix the accounting of the two structures or call collateral a first instalment for the commodity. For each structure, reconstruct exposure, revaluation, additional payments and the way the obligation ends.
Ask: if 500 monetary units remain after the loss, is that enough to continue the position? A positive residual does not answer this; funding rules and other obligations are needed. Conversely, a negative economic residual in the model does not determine every legal consequence without the contract. Separate arithmetic capital, available liquidity and contractual procedure.
Loss and probability are different questions
The scenario proves that a negative residual is possible in the stated model, but it does not calculate the probability. Invented prices must not be presented as a statistical estimate of crisis frequency. Probability analysis would require data and a separate method with its own limits. To understand the obligation, it is enough to see that contractual debt need not move with collateral value.
Also check the denominator used for the loss percentage. A change in total asset value and a change in own capital have different bases. With substantial debt, the same monetary move produces a much larger relative result on the smaller equity base. This is arithmetic, not additional protection. Naming the base and debt composition makes the explanation verifiable without assuming a smooth market.
