Three different numbers
Default probability, recovery share if default occurs and present value of expected cash are different parameters. Do not call a probability a loss amount, or an asset valuation an already received recovery. Even with collateral, establish availability and realizable price. An issue name or famous brand does not replace this information. [Issuer and security identifiers](/guides/issuer-and-security-identifiers/) explains why the obligated entity must be identified rather than treating a corporate group as one debtor.
Educational example: from principal of 1,000, only 350 is eventually received. Nominal principal loss is 65%. If the same 350 arrives only after two years, its present value at a conditional 10% rate is about 289.26. That second figure is not a legally established claim amount; it is the cost of delay in a selected financial model. Coupons, recovery expenses and interim receipts are excluded. If present, rebuild the full calendar rather than using one final amount.
Expected loss is not a future timetable
In another simplified model, default probability is 4%, recovery is 35% and the claim is 1,000. 0.04 × 0.65 × 1,000 gives 26 monetary units. This is an educational expected credit loss for the stated horizon and assumptions, not a claim that a particular holder will lose exactly 26. Outcomes differ from the average. Dependence between probability and recovery, payment timing, discounting and changing claim size are not modelled.
The arithmetic distinguishes concepts but creates no reliable input probabilities. They cannot be inferred only from a bond yield or intuition and then called objective risk calculation. A market premium may reflect liquidity, contract features and other causes. Historical averages do not guarantee applicability to another debtor, priority or economic environment. Mark input uncertainty explicitly.
Breach and changed terms
A late payment, an agreed schedule change and a final incomplete recovery have different consequences. Do not automatically call every change a default, or absence of a formal announcement proof of full performance. Use document definitions and current notices. This guide sets no universal permissible delay and no procedure for filing a claim. For a specific debt, the framework helps formulate document questions but does not replace legal analysis.
Collect dates and amounts of every actual receipt, list unpaid payments and expenses, then establish whether the recovery measure is a percentage of face value, purchase price or discounted amount. [Bonds](/guides/bonds/) explains the debt claim, while [bond-rate risk](/guides/bond-rate-risk/) helps distinguish a temporary quote change from a breach. This text does not issue ratings, select risky issues or promise full recovery from collateral or infrastructure.
Check the recovery measure
A notice reporting recovery of part of face value does not tell you what price a particular holder paid or what costs were incurred. Individual outcome requires that holder’s own cash sequence. Conversely, buying at a large discount does not make a breached obligation legally fully performed: claim substance and transaction result are different levels.
Clarify whether the reported recovery share is an expected estimate, an agreed restructuring term or cash already received. These have different evidentiary bases. If cash is expected later, use a calendar; if assets were valued, explain the path from assets to the amount available to creditors. In the example, all amounts are given, so the conclusion is limited to arithmetic. Do not substitute an average from another period or market and call it a guarantee.
