First define what is being protected
List essential payments that are difficult to postpone: housing, food, necessary medicines, transport and minimum contractual payments. Separately record expenses that could be reduced temporarily. This distinction matters more than a neat round number: a reserve based on all card spending may include costs that would disappear after an income disruption.
Describe possible events next. The same number of months provides different protection for a person with a stable salary and someone with seasonal income. Consider independent income sources, obligations to dependants and the time needed to restore receipts. Use several scenarios instead of adding every imaginable disaster into one unaffordable target.
Planned holidays, education and annual insurance belong in separate savings. If they are constantly paid from the emergency fund, the reserve exists on paper but not when an unexpected event occurs.
An illustrative target and saving pace
All numbers are conditional. Suppose necessary expenses are 55,000 roubles per month. An educational scenario uses four months of income interruption and a separate 20,000-rouble buffer for an urgent one-off problem. The target is 55,000 × 4 + 20,000 = 240,000 roubles. This is not a universal standard or personal recommendation.
If 90,000 roubles are already available, 150,000 remains. At a monthly contribution of 15,000 and excluding interest, ten months are required. Do not include an expected bonus before it arrives, and do not treat a credit limit as your own reserve: borrowing creates a new obligation.
Review the target after essential expenses, household composition or income patterns change. Keep the explanation beside the number so a revised amount reflects circumstances rather than an alarming headline.
Test access before an emergency
Risk includes not only loss of value but also inability to obtain money when needed. Check withdrawal conditions, transfer times, dependence on one application and access if the phone is lost. Contractual access and the technical ability to make a payment are different questions.
Imagine that a payment is due tomorrow, the phone is unavailable and the branch is closed. What part of the reserve is actually usable? This test exposes organisational limits in the chosen storage method. Never put passwords or codes in a public budget table or give them to someone claiming to be a bank employee.
Use and restore the reserve
Set out in advance which events permit spending. After use, record the reason, the balance and a possible restoration pace. A withdrawal is not automatically a failure: the reserve exists for defined disruptions. Repeated shortages for ordinary purchases instead indicate that the budget needs review.
Finish with a short checklist: essential expenses are separated from wants; known large payments have their own savings; the scenario is explained; access has been tested; restoration is planned. Interest may supplement the reserve, but measuring it only by income misses its main function: preserving the ability to meet near-term obligations calmly.
