How to compare deposit terms, not advertised rates

A headline rate does not answer how much money will be available on the date you need it. Compare deposits using the same amount, term, possible top-ups and realistic early-use scenario. The rates and amounts below are educational examples, not current offers.

Use the same terms card

For each option record the organization and product name, the date of the terms, the term and amount range. Add the rate for each period, payment calendar, capitalization, top-ups, withdrawals and early closure. A rate may differ by period, and transaction rights depend on the deposit terms.

Check requirements for an enhanced rate: customer status, opening method, additional services or a specified source of funds. Do not put a preferential condition into the base calculation when you do not know whether it can be met. If meeting it requires a paid service, include that cost and do not call the payment bank interest.

Keep the document, not only an advertising screenshot. Record the page or clause supporting each condition. If wording conflicts, request a written explanation before signing rather than silently choosing the more favorable version.

A comparable result

Suppose 200,000 roubles are placed for one year without top-ups. Option A pays a hypothetical 10.5% at the end. Option B pays a hypothetical 10% with capitalization over twelve equal periods. Taxes, expenses and calendar differences are excluded.

Option A ends at 221,000 roubles. Option B, using 200,000 × (1 + 0.10 / 12)^12, ends at 220,942.61 roubles. The difference is only 57.39 roubles. This does not prove either option is better; it shows why accrual mechanics matter.

If the money is needed earlier, assume Option A recalculates the entire term at 0.1% per year on a 365-day basis after ninety days. The income would be only 49.32 roubles. This invented rule is not a bank characteristic; it shows why early exit can matter more than a small difference in annual results.

Tiered rates and limits

For a changing rate, split the term into intervals. Record the base, number of days, rate and rule for adding income in each interval. A simple average is not always valid: intervals can differ in length and the balance can change. A higher rate during a short opening period does not describe the whole term.

Check what a top-up restriction means. Money that can be added only during the first weeks is not the same as unrestricted top-ups throughout the year. A partial withdrawal may require a minimum balance. Describe the actions in your scenario and compare them with the contract.

Check the organization and decide

The Bank of Russia provides an official service for checking whether financial-market participants have the relevant authorization. Searching by name and identifiers helps distinguish an organization from a similarly branded website. Authorization is not a guarantee of future income or of every advertising promise.

Present the result without a universal ranking: what happens at full term, what happens on early exit, which operations are available and which questions remain open. Check applicable insurance and tax rules separately; neither follows merely from the word “deposit”. Sometimes the correct conclusion is that the information is insufficient.
