From a line item to its explanation
“Other liabilities” is not useful until its components are known. It may include accrued services, provisions or other items with different timing and uncertainty. A note turns the amount into a bridge: opening balance, recognition, use, revision and closing balance.
IAS 1 includes notes and accounting policies in the complete financial-statement package. Restrictions on cash, major estimates, policy changes and debt details may sit there. Notes are not decorative material after ratios; they can determine whether headline figures are understood correctly.
A fictional warranty provision
A technology manufacturer has a provision of 18 at the start of the year, recognises 12 more and uses 9 for repairs. With no other movements, the closing balance is 18 + 12 − 9 = 21. The increase from 18 to 21 does not mean expense was only 3: it is the closing movement after use, not the new charge.
IAS 37 distinguishes provisions, such as warranties, from contingent liabilities that may be disclosed but not recognised. Do not mechanically add every disclosed risk to recognised liabilities; different bases can create double counting.
Do not overread the audit wording
Read the opinion and its basis, then material messages and referenced notes. A description of a difficult estimate is not automatically a qualification, while a quiet press release is not a reason to skip the opinion. Use the document itself, not management’s paraphrase.
An unmodified opinion is not a guarantee that there are no errors, fraud or future losses. Ask what is asserted about the statements and where the audit scope ends. A post-report demand fall and the ability to meet a personal investment plan are not guaranteed by an auditor’s signature.
A practical reading card
For each major line, record the note number, measurement method, main uncertainty and period movement. For the opinion, record addressee, period, perimeter and wording. If a presentation contains a metric absent from the statements, find its definition and reconciliation separately. Preserve the date and version of the opinion so the analysis remains reproducible.
This guide does not issue an audit opinion or confirm the quality of a particular audit. Check opinion categories and applicable audit standards in the document and jurisdiction. Use the financial-statement roadmap and adjustments guides, returning to the note whenever an analytical assumption is material.
One financing need, five different questions
A fictional manufacturer seeks 300 for new equipment. A consultant checks a demand model, a rating agency assesses the credit risk of a particular bond issue, a bank offers secured credit, an investment bank discusses a bond issue and management prepares statements and a forecast. Five participants do not mean five independent audits.
Success-based consultant compensation creates an incentive worth disclosing, but does not by itself prove a false model. Issuer-paid ratings require understanding conflicts and procedures, but facts are needed before calling a rating bought. Compare task, procedures, data source, date and addressee, not just logo recognition.
Role and boundary map
The company prepares statements and explanations; an external consultant provides a defined model or transaction service; a rating agency gives a methodology-based credit opinion; a commercial bank provides credit and monitors repayment; an investment bank structures an offering. Each result has a different payer, scope and limit. Internal audit is a separate third line evaluating governance, risk and controls, not an extra seller of certainty.
Foreign materials on ratings, advisers, commercial lending, IPO underwriters and the IIA explain those specific contexts. Their registration requirements and legal regimes are not transferred to Russia. Outside the disclosed scope, the correct answer is “not established,” not a presumed guarantee.
