Guide

Read a financial contract as a map of payments and obligations

A product name does not show who must return money or under what conditions. Start with an obligation map: who receives funds, who pays the owner, when, how much and what changes on early termination. The Bank of Russia’s 30 March 2021 response on combined offers distinguishes deposit and investment components and asks readers to identify the contractual party.[1](#source-savx-cbr-contract) The page was checked 15 October 2026. This is an educational distinction, not a statement of current insurance limits, taxes or universal exit rights.

One package may contain several contracts

Write each person’s full name and role. The organisation taking an application may act as another party’s agent. Identify separately who receives payment and who must perform. For a Russian financial participant, the Bank of Russia official service can check authority for the activity.[2](#source-savx-cbr-register) Correct identification does not prove a product is profitable or risk-free; it is one layer of checking.

A flow map instead of an advertising percentage

For each component record initial amount, dates, mandatory later payments, result formula, return date, expenses and termination scenario. Do not record a contingent payment as unconditional. If amount depends on an asset price, index or event, record formula and data source. “Protection” requires identifying who promises what and with which limits. A missing commission on the first page does not exclude costs in annexes or tariffs.

A two-part educational package

Suppose total amount is 200,000 roubles: 70%, or 140,000, goes to a conditional deposit component and 60,000 to another component. Only the first has a 10% annual educational return, so its full-year income is 14,000. Applying 10% to all 200,000 and expecting 20,000 is wrong. If the other fictional component preserves value without income, total pre-cost growth is 7%. This is not an existing product or a forecast for the second component.

If the second component loses value or has extra costs, the result changes. If its term differs from the first year, the common horizon needs clarification. Do not transfer return, access or guarantee language from one component to another. The zero result was an explicit scenario, not an unknown silently replaced by zero.

Pay special attention to exit

Record earliest access, notice procedure, settlement time and return formula. If components have different consequences, show them separately. Compare “you can withdraw” with “what amount will I receive and when?” Do not decide legality of a retention without current review of the actual contract. This guide does not claim a common early-termination right and is not legal advice.

Preserve the version and do not fill gaps by guessing

Compare annexes, tariffs and version dates with the document to be signed. Mark external rules and request their text. Keep evidence of the accepted version, not just the current advertising page. Do not sign blanks or treat an oral explanation as a formula. An honest result may contain unresolved questions; that is better than a precise rate based on unknown terms. For ordinary deposits see [deposit conditions](/guides/comparing-deposit-conditions/); for a complex package map each component first.

Test a condition with the reverse question

For every promised payment ask: under what event would it not arrive or would change? Find the clause instead of assuming no exception. Do the reverse for mandatory client payments: when can they be omitted without changing the contract? If the answer is in another document, add it to the version map. Mark an unknown and state which conclusion remains unproven without it.

Store the accepted contract version and payment evidence using [document-record rules](/guides/tax-records-basics/), without confusing financial-result checking with a tax-base conclusion.
