Currency prices, cash flows and country of risk

Let's imagine a completely fictitious enterprise. It is registered in country A, the plant is located in country B, goods are sold for dollars, part of the expenses are paid in currency B. Its shares are listed in country A, and its depositary receipt is quoted in euros on market B. The owner's future expenses are expressed in rubles. These are five different characteristics; neither is automatically derived from the other.

One company and four different currency issues

Let's imagine a completely fictitious enterprise. It is registered in country A, the plant is located in country B, goods are sold for dollars, part of the expenses are paid in currency B. Its shares are listed in country A, and its depositary receipt is quoted in euros on market B. The owner's future expenses are expressed in rubles. These are five different characteristics; neither is automatically derived from the other.

Let us denote the notional currency B by the letter B. The company receives 10 million dollars over the period, incurs local expenses of 400 million B and pays interest on the debt 1 million dollars. Taxes, capital investments and other flows are omitted for now. At the rate of 80 B per dollar, revenue in local terms is equal to 800 million B, interest - 80 million. After the two indicated expenses, there remains 320 million B, or 4 million dollars.

If the rate changes to 100 B per dollar, with dollar revenue and local expenses unchanged, the remainder becomes 1 000 − 400 − 100 = 500 million B, or 5 million dollars. This is operational sensitivity to currency mismatches. But it cannot be argued that weakening Currency B is always beneficial: import costs, the dollar amount of debt, the price of goods or demand can also change. The included interest does not replace the repayment of the debt; for the commitment calendar it is added separately.

Receipt quotation - another recalculation

Let in the independent scenario the price of the receipt is equal to 20 euros and has not changed. For the owner, at the exchange rate 90 rubles per euro, this is 1 800 rubles, at 110 - 2 200. The ruble change is equal to 22,22%, although the euro quote is constant. This is only a price recalculation, and not a forecast of business reactions. If the price of the receipt in euros itself changes, the overall result is obtained by the product of the price and currency multipliers, and not by simple addition of percentages.

There is a coefficient established by the program between the receipt and the underlying shares. Using the example of ADR, the SEC separately describes the underlying securities, depositary bank and program expenses.[2](#source-market-receipts) But the American description of ADR cannot be declared a uniform law for any GDR, EDR or other receipts. ADR stands for American Depositary Construct as described by the SEC; GDR is a global form of placement. The depository division of Deutsche Bank explains that GDRs can provide access to several markets and that their currency does not have to coincide with the geography of circulation. [3](#source-cp-gdr-types) Therefore, the contrast “American means dollar, global means European currency” is not suitable. The EDR designation itself also does not replace European program documents and actual currency verification. The name of the form indicates the need to read documents of a particular design and does not guarantee interchangeability and free conversion.

Even a positive change in the ruble valuation does not necessarily finance the expenditure on time. It is necessary to check the sale, settlements, receipt of money, possible exchange and transfer to the payment currency. Matching the quote currency with the expense currency would eliminate only one arithmetic step, but not market, credit or infrastructure risk.

Jurisdiction and operational geography are not interchangeable

For our company, the law of the country of registration, the rules of the location of the plant, the documents of the receipt program and the intermediary chain of the owner are separately listed. Demand for products may depend on one country, legal protection on another, and access to payments on a third. Economic diversification across buyers does not prove independence of legal access. Conversely, two securities in the same jurisdiction may have different currency flows.

Let's consider stress without a statement about the current restrictions: the turnover business continues to operate, but at one level of accounting it is temporarily impossible to transfer rights or receive payment. The calculation of the operating balance of 5 million dollars does not estimate the duration of this delay. A separate unknown parameter is left in the “access” column; You cannot mechanically reduce the cost by the selected percentage and consider the issue resolved.

Analysis passport instead of one label

Make up the following lines: price and payment currency; currencies of revenue, costs and debt; country of assets and buyers; applicable issuer and shell documents; intermediaries and access period; currency and date of your own goal. For each field, store the source and the unknown. Don't take a brand's nationality as proof of everything else.

The numbers in this lesson do not describe a specific issuer, current rates, penalties, tax treatment, or resident eligibility to open an account. They allow for three separate stresses: changes in operational flows, changes in price recalculation and access delays. The grand total is then compared to the commitment. Neither a quotation in a familiar currency, nor a foreign registration, nor distributed sales individually transform an asset into a risk-free security for the target.
