Net debt

Net debt is an analytical measure that subtracts specified cash resources from a specified set of financial debt. There is no single universal interpretation of every component: leases, liquid investments and restricted cash require explanation.

Meaning and example

Net debt is an analytical measure that subtracts specified cash resources from a specified set of financial debt. There is no single universal interpretation of every component: leases, liquid investments and restricted cash require explanation. In NYU materials, cash and debt claims are considered separately when moving from operating assets to equity.[98](#source-cv-equity-bridge)

If the assumed debt is 150 million roubles and the cash available for the selected purpose is 40 million, net debt is 110 million roubles. If some cash is needed for operations or is unavailable, treating the entire balance-sheet line as a freely available deduction may be wrong.

Limits of interpretation

Negative net debt means that the cash included in the calculation exceeds the debt included in it; it does not mean that all liabilities are absent or that safety is guaranteed. Payment dates, liquidity and other claims remain material. For comparison, keep the date, debt composition, conditions for accessing funds and a consistent method. Net debt is not the same as total accounting liabilities and does not replace a payment schedule.
