Floating coupon

The SEC distinguishes a floating-rate structure from a fixed-rate structure, and FINRA describes different terms for debt instruments.[14](#source-cm-corporate)[15](#source-cm-bonds) In a common educational model, the reference indicator is added to a spread, but a contract may include averaging, caps, a special calendar and other parameters. Knowing the formula does not reveal every future amount.

Knowing the formula does not reveal every future amount.

You need to determine the observation date, applicable period, day-count basis, outstanding principal and the procedure if the indicator is unavailable. A market move today may not change the nearest coupon that has already been fixed. The contractual spread is not the same as the market yield on the purchase. A floating rate also does not remove default, liquidity or the possibility of a price change. The [coupon formula analysis](/guides/floating-coupon-reset/) contains two scenarios for one contract and expressly limits the applicability of its educational day-count basis.
