One amount and multiple cash flows
Future value asks what an amount or sequence of payments becomes by a common date under a stated scenario. In an educational one-amount model, it is the initial money multiplied by an accumulation factor. With multiple contributions, each cash flow is considered for its own period of time.
Dates and assumptions
For example, a later contribution participates in fewer accruals than an earlier one. Therefore, the same total amount of contributions does not produce the same future balance. First specify the dates, rate per period, timing of deposits and accruals, expenses and reinvestment conditions.
Future value is not profit
Investor.gov separates the initial amount, contributions, term and compounding frequency in its calculator.[1](#source-savx-compound) These are educational parameters, not confirmation of future income. Future value is not equal to profit: it includes the person’s own contributed money. Nor can it be treated as today’s purchasing power without separately defining the price basis.
