Contract exposure exceeds the deposit
In an educational example, a contract represents 100 units of an underlying measure and the opening price is 100 monetary units per unit. Notional exposure is 10,000. The exercise initially allocates 1,500 of margin to the account. These are not equal: 1,500 is not the purchase price of all 100 underlying units. The model assumes a linear cash conversion with a constant multiplier of 100. For another contract, read the specification: the quote unit and the monetary value of a price change may be structured differently.
When the settlement price falls from 100 to 96, the modeled long position loses 400. A further move from 96 to 92 loses another 400. The total change is −800. If nothing else moves, the initial 1,500 falls to 700. Restoring exactly the original educational amount of 1,500 would require 800 of additional cash. This is not a real requirement calculation: in practice, available assets, valuation, required levels and deadlines may be determined differently, and the margin requirement itself may change.
The path of cash matters
Even if the price later returns to its starting point, the participant may have needed funds earlier. The sequence of cash settlements cannot be replaced with the final difference and declared irrelevant. The opposite error also matters: variation margin already credited must not be added again to the full opening-to-closing price change as a separate profit. Reconstruct every actual movement and check that the same revaluation has not been counted twice.
Collateral may still be required to maintain obligations after a negative result has been debited. Therefore, “I still have a positive balance” is not enough to conclude that no action is needed. The CFTC distinguishes initial and maintenance margin and notes that an intermediary may require more than an exchange.[25](#source-cm-margin) Foreign numerical examples do not apply here. Broker and clearing terms must be checked separately, including close-out rights and how collateral assets are handled. This general article does not set a funding deadline.
Clearing does not cancel a market loss
A central counterparty and collateral mechanisms organize performance of defined obligations. MOEX separately describes the roles of trading and clearing infrastructure.[24](#source-cm-clearing) That does not mean the participant is reimbursed for an adverse move. The initial deposit is not insurance against every loss. In a sharp move and an illiquid market, a close-out may occur at terms different from those expected in advance. Understanding risk requires a cash scenario, not only the ratio of notional value to deposit.
A checking table should include contract size, multiplier, settlement values, every revaluation, costs, collateral requirements and actual deposits. Mark which quantities are known and which are scenario assumptions. [Basic introduction to derivatives](/guides/futures-and-options/) explains the parties’ obligations, [settlement route](/guides/exchange-and-settlement/) distinguishes a trade from its performance, and [portfolio risks](/guides/portfolio-risk/) connects cash needs with timing. Arithmetic knowledge does not establish that futures are suitable and is not advice to increase exposure through small margin.
Specification: tick and monetary value
In a separate educational exercise, the minimum quote increment is half a point and the value of one tick per contract is five monetary units. A move from 100 to 103 equals six ticks. For two long contracts, the result before costs is 60 monetary units. The multiplier here is ten per point, so multiplying the quote change only by the number of contracts would be wrong. All parameters are set by the exercise and do not describe a tradable instrument.
To read a real specification, list separately the contract size, quote unit, tick, tick value, result currency, term and settlement method. If tick value depends on another exchange rate or measure, the constant multiplier in this exercise is not appropriate. Last-trading and delivery dates also require separate checking. This process turns a quote into a verifiable monetary obligation and does not assume that initial margin equals full exposure.
