Average performance does not describe the next project
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, High historical returns may come from old assets with low remaining book cost. New equipment may cost more, or expansion may enter a less protected market. Transferring average ROIC to all future investments can overstate the forecast.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, The reverse can occur when new capacity is underutilized. Low current ROIC does not prove permanent inefficiency, but improvement must be tied to observable timing and demand. A line called “normalization” is not evidence by itself.
A conditional economic residual
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Suppose 200 million roubles are invested in current operations and NOPAT is 30 million. Educational ROIC is 15%. At WACC 10%, the conditional capital charge is 20 million and the residual is 10 million. This is an analytical construct, not accounting profit or cash automatically available for distribution.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, An additional 50 million project producing expected annual NOPAT of 4 million has an 8% return. At a 10% requirement, its residual is negative 1 million per year. If NOPAT is 7 million, return is 14% and residual is positive 2 million. Launch timing, terminal value, changing risk and reinvestment are omitted; a full project decision needs cash-flow modelling.
Which definitions must agree?
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Specify operating assets, excess cash, leases and acquired assets in invested capital. NOPAT must use the same perimeter and tax basis. Beginning, ending and average capital can differ in a year of large investment; explain the method rather than selecting the highest result.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, WACC is not fixed forever. Debt structure, currency and risk change funding requirements. Do not compare nominal rouble return with a real rate in another currency or use the old financing cost of a quiet business for a riskier project.
From spread to value
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, A positive ROIC–WACC spread is a research signal, not proof that a share is attractive. Price may already assume prolonged high returns and growth. Also ask how much new capital can be deployed and how long the advantage can last. A small profitable niche need not scale indefinitely.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Separate existing and new assets, give a range for expansion returns and test capital needs. If definitions are incompatible, do not infer value from the percentage difference. Neither spread nor modelled economic profit guarantees an investor return.
Do not mistake accounting differences for economic protection
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Companies that created assets differently may have different accounting capital. Acquired technology and internally developed technology need not form the same base. Decompose high ROIC into operating result and denominator origin before calling it evidence of unique quality.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Describe investment speed and ramp-up separately. Intermediate loss years belong in the valuation alongside later success. The spread is useful for questions—what supports incremental return and for how long?—but a historical percentage difference cannot answer them alone.
Investor adaptation is not derived from one ROIC
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Andrew Lo’s 2004 Adaptive Markets Hypothesis offers a qualitative research framework linking competition, adaptation and changing environments; it is not a ready-made return law. Do not turn the biological word “evolution” into a guarantee of strategy progress.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, In an author-built model, capital 100 produces NOPAT 20 at a 10% requirement, leaving annual residual 10. If it lasts three years, its present value at 10% is 24.87; at five years it is 37.91. The difference 13.04 comes from duration, not starting ROIC. A permanent terminal excess profit would require separate proof.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Record triggers rather than a desired trade count: loss of reproducibility, changed contracts or disappearance of a supply constraint. More frequent data review does not mean more trading.
Owning an asset or organizing a service: different growth bases
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Two fictional delivery services have customer revenue of 100. The asset owner has NOPAT 12, operating capital 80, turnover 1.25 and ROIC 15%. The agency model passes 80 to contractors, reports net revenue 20, has NOPAT 3, capital 10, turnover 2 and ROIC 30%. The presentation is stipulated; a real report cannot be inferred from the word “platform.”
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, If a new owned unit requires 20 and adds NOPAT 2, return is 10%, below the 15% average. If agency expansion requires 5 and adds 0.5, return is also 10%, below its 30% average. Timing, risk and obligations still matter.
Management attention is also allocated
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, One team can launch only one of two independent improvements. A may add 50 of revenue but have NPV 2 after cash costs; B adds 15 of revenue and NPV 8. At equal risk, value-added choice differs from maximum turnover. Record key-person capacity, dependencies and delay cost; do not add old NPV to a project moved to a new date.
Cash conversion and sale of operating assets
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, For the two services, the asset owner has NOPAT 12, depreciation 8, maintenance investment 10 and working-capital increase 2, leaving 8 before growth and financing. The agency has 3, 1, 1 and 0.5, leaving 2.5. These are conditional analytical flows, not universal reporting classifications.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Selling equipment for 30 is not 30 of extra annual operating profit. Account for lost capacity, residual value, expenses, possible tax and replacement or rent. Do not add sale proceeds to value while retaining the entire old operating flow.
Replacement costs rise: maintenance before distribution
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, With NOPAT 20, depreciation 10 and no working-capital increase, replacing capacity costs 14 instead of the old 10. Cash before debt and growth is 20 + 10 − 14 = 16, not 20. An additional 6 for expansion leaves 10 and requires future-flow justification. Maintenance and expansion may share one payment; the analytical split needs a technical basis.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Pricing power depends on substitutes and customers. Low capital intensity can aid conversion but is not universally preferable regardless of purchase price, competitive duration and obligations. High ROIC on an old base does not prove return on a costly replacement or low-return expansion.
