The numerator shows whose claims are valued
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, P/S = E/S, where E is the capitalization of selected shares and S the matching annual revenue. EV/Sales uses enterprise value owed to different capital providers. In a simplified bridge, EV = E + D − C: financial debt is added and excess non-operating cash subtracted. Real groups may require leases, non-controlling interests and other items.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Revenue is generated before interest payments. P/S compares shareholders’ residual claim with a measure that must also serve creditors. EV/Sales reduces this mismatch but does not turn revenue into free cash flow.
Equal sales and different debt
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Companies A and B each have sales of 200. Set EV at 180 and assume identical operations. A has debt 20 and excess cash 10: E = 180 − 20 + 10 = 170 and P/S = 0.85. B has debt 100 and cash 10: E = 90 and P/S = 0.45. EV/Sales is 0.90 for both. The arithmetic isolates how claims are split; it does not prove debt would leave EV unchanged in reality.
Margin turns equal revenue into different results
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, With S = 200 and EV = 180, an EBIT margin of 15% gives EBIT 30 and EV/EBIT 6; a 5% margin gives EBIT 10 and EV/EBIT 18. EV/Sales is 0.90 for both. The identity EV/Sales = (EV/EBIT) × (EBIT/Sales) helps unpack the difference when EBIT is positive and consistently defined, but does not determine fair value or sustainable margin.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Check gross versus net revenue. An agent reporting only commission and a seller reporting full goods value may have similar transaction volume but different S. Align recognition method, geography and consolidation perimeter.
Capital intensity changes available cash
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, Two firms have revenue 200, NOPAT 24 and operating value 180. One has net capex 4 and working-capital increase 2, so FCFF = 24 − 4 − 2 = 18. The other needs 14 and 6, so FCFF = 4. At the same EV/Sales, EV/FCFF is 10 and 45 if the flows are comparable.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, One-year FCFF may be distorted by equipment launches, inventory changes or temporarily reduced investment. Study maintenance separately from expansion and use several periods; low current investment can be underinvestment, not a superior model.
When revenue does not help
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, At S = 0 there is no meaningful multiple; negative sales after returns need a special analysis. Near-zero revenue makes the ratio highly error-sensitive. For financial institutions, debt may be part of operations, so an ordinary EV bridge may not fit. Positive denominator does not erase loss-making economics.
Dans ce modèle pédagogique, A working table should include valuation date, sales period, debt and cash definitions, ownership, margin, net investment and working capital. Additional sales can require spending before producing cash. A lower P/S or EV/Sales is a prompt to explain claims, earnings quality and financing—not a guarantee of undervaluation or a buy instruction.
